The stars came out in force last night in honour of schoolboy Damilola
Taylor. I was invited by<b> <a href="../../../../camden/bars_music-greggbrown/" target="_blank">Gregg
Brown</a></b><a href="../../../../camden/bars_music-greggbrown/"> </a>singer/songwriter
to the Jazz Caf for a night of music and remembrance as well as to launch
the tribute single Wake Up The Morning. Damilola's parents and family
were all there to see the likes of Damage, Gabrielle, Finlay Quaye, Sean
Escofferry, Patti Boulaye paying tribute to the son they lost. Damilola's
parents have set up a Damilola Taylor Trust Fund; and the eveningraised
funds in its honour. Humour and laughter was the order of the night, as
comedian Angie Le Mar had everyone in stitches with her wicked</font></div>

Every single one of the performers believe in the power of music to send
a message of hope, showed their support, by not only performing but taking
time out of their busy schedules to perform for free and raise awareness.
Gregg Brown, of the band Osibisa, was inspired to make the single Wake
Up The Morning after filming a documentary about Damilola's funeral. He
originally wrote the song in 1984, but it is a song that suits this time
perfectly. Damage, Gabrielle, Roachford, Des'ree and Courtney Pine are
the artists featured on the single.</font> </div>

performed last night, and when they did, the hairs on the back of my neck
stood up; it is a song that truly touches you. Des'ree said she had been
"shocked and devastated" by the murder and the other artists also said
kind words of hope and vowed to always remember Damilola. Gregg told me
it took him around 8 months to find a record label that were willing to
release it because of all the politics in the music industry. It takes
a tragedy like the death of Damilola Taylor to bring a community together,
what I want to know is why it had to happen in the first place? The single
is being released 29 October. </font></div>
