The Beckett Collection at the University of Reading originated in the Samuel Beckett Exhibition of 1971 and grew rapidly, largely through material donated by Beckett himself and by friends and admirers from the worlds of literature and theatre. It is now the most extensive collection of Beckett materials in the world and is unique in the richness of its holdings of manuscripts and correspondence. Because of the continuing involvement of the international Beckett community, it is also extremely rich in contextual and related materials. The Beckett International Foundation was set up as a charitable trust in 1988, with the University of Reading as Trustee.

The Foundation has served the international Beckett community for many years through its conferences, publications and related events. Beckett scholars at Reading have had well-established profiles and have collaborated with their peers at home and abroad for more than a generation. The Foundation’s Archive is open to anyone interested in Beckett’s life and work and receives around 350 researchers annually from all over the world.
